Over the past few weeks, tomato prices in the country have reached alarming heights, reaching as high as Rs 300 per kilogram in some regions. As this price surge burdened people's budgets, they began exploring alternative methods to acquire this essential kitchen staple.
In this particular instance, a daughter residing in Dubai asked her mother in India if there was anything she desired from the UAE city. Surprisingly, her mother replied with a request for 10 kilograms of tomatoes.
The Twitter user, known as 'Revs,' shared this incident on the popular microblogging platform, Twitter. She tweeted, "My sister is coming to India from Dubai for her children's summer holidays, and she asked my mum if she wanted anything from Dubai. My mother replied, 'Bring 10 kilos of tomatoes.' And so, she packed 10 kilograms of tomatoes in a suitcase and sent them."
In a follow-up tweet, Revs revealed that her sister had carefully packed the tomatoes in Pearlpet storage jars and placed them in her suitcase for the journey to India.
The tweet has since garnered over 47,000 views and more than 600 likes.
Twitter users were quick to express their admiration for the thoughtful gesture. One user wrote, "She deserves the 'Best Daughter' award, especially during these times of inflation." Another jokingly remarked, "Quite resourceful! Let's hope airport customs doesn't catch your sister for bringing in high-value items."
Meanwhile, amidst the ongoing price surge, a remarkable story has unfolded in Maharashtra's Pune district. Farmer Ishwar Gaykar, from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil, faced the difficult decision of discarding a substantial quantity of harvested tomatoes due to low prices in May. Nevertheless, he displayed unwavering determination and continued working tirelessly on his 12-acre farm, cultivating tomatoes despite the challenges.
