A man in Telangana’s Siddipet district allegedly killed his mother-in-law to claim ₹55 lakh in insurance money and tried to make it look like a road accident. However, CCTV footage and police investigation revealed the truth, leading to the arrest of the accused. On July 7, police received a Dial 100 call about an elderly woman, Ramavva, who was found dead near Peddamasanpally in a suspected hit-and-run case. CCTV footage showed an SUV hitting her as she walked by the roadside.

Police identify vehicle and trace suspects

Investigators tracked the vehicle using its registration number and found that it was a rented taxi. Siddipet police commissioner B Anuradha said two men had rented the SUV for a day. One of them was identified as Ramavva’s son-in-law, T Venkatesh.

Confession and motive

Venkatesh and his brother Karunakar were taken into custody. During interrogation, they admitted to planning and executing the murder to claim life insurance worth ₹55 lakh.

“They said they were influenced by the movie Drishyam and believed they could commit the crime without getting caught,” police said.
According to police, Ramavva owned two acres of land. The accused had convinced her to take out two insurance policies, citing financial security. They also planned to claim benefits under the state’s Rythu Bima farmer insurance scheme.

Crime execution

On the day of the incident, Venkatesh took Ramavva to her field, saying he needed her signature for a power connection. When no official turned up, he asked her to walk home. As per their plan, Karunakar drove the SUV into her.

The accused believed the act would appear as an accident. However, CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and vehicle tracking exposed the truth. Police said legal proceedings are underway and further investigation is in progress.
