A woman’s observation about an unusually quiet night at an upscale residential society in Mumbai has sparked a discussion online about home loans, expensive housing and whether homeowners get enough time to enjoy the properties and amenities they spend years paying for.

Instagram user Ruchi Dubey shared a video showing the largely empty common areas of a high-rise residential society on a Monday night. Referring to the high property prices and rents in the area, Dubey questioned whether residents who take on substantial home loans have enough time to use the amenities and enjoy the homes they have worked to afford.

‘Flats here cost in the crores’

In the video, Dubey pointed to the size of the residential complex and the cost of homes and rentals there.

“It’s a very big society. And, you know, flats here cost in the crores. The rents are also completely in lakhs here,” she said.

She then drew attention to the lack of activity around the complex, saying it was Monday night and that the garden, parking area and other common spaces appeared largely deserted.

“But, you know, one thing I have noticed is that today is Monday night, and no one is here. Like, the entire garden is empty, all the lights in the society are off, and there’s not a single person in the parking lot because tomorrow is Tuesday,” she said.

‘The person who bought this house doesn’t even have time to enjoy’

Dubey used the empty premises to question whether residents working long hours to repay home loans are able to make use of the facilities available to them.

“So, I want to say one thing: the person who bought this house doesn’t even have time to enjoy the amenities here. All the time, they are just doing a job,” she said.

She questioned who gets to enjoy the quiet surroundings, views and walking spaces on a Monday night.

“Who is able to enjoy this quiet night, this view, walking around, etc.? Only those who don’t have any responsibilities,” she added.

Dubey warns young people about long-term financial commitments

The Instagram user then turned her attention to young people considering large financial commitments, urging them to assess the long-term consequences before purchasing a home or making other major financial decisions.

“Most of the youth take home loans at a very young age, and then they spend their whole lives paying off the loan, and they are never able to enjoy that thing,” Dubey said.

She advised viewers to think carefully before making such commitments so they would not regret their decisions later.

“Make sure that if you ever feel like buying something, a house or whatever, or making any financial decisions, think carefully before buying so that you don’t have to regret anything later,” she said.

Pointing again to the apparently empty residential complex, Dubey concluded her message by warning viewers against what she described as a “home loan trap”.

“Like, you know, there’s nobody. See! So, make sure you take a wise decision and don’t get trapped in this home loan trap,” she said.

The video was shared with the caption, “Advice to all the youngsters out there.”

Social media users weigh in

Dubey’s comments prompted reactions from Instagram users, with some agreeing with her view that home loans can become a significant financial burden for young homeowners.

One user wrote, “Yes, true, many youngsters are basically trapped in the home loans.”

Another commented, “Yeah, it’s really correct,” while a third user responded, “Thanks for the advice.”

The discussion centred on the balance between homeownership, financial commitments and the time available to enjoy the lifestyle and amenities associated with expensive residential properties.
