Donald Trump indicted by New York grand jury over hush money payments

Donald Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury on Thursday over hush money payments. While the exact criminal charges against the 76-year-old former US President would be released in the coming days, a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said in a statement that they contacted Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the DA’s office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment.





Trump’s indictment came in connection with a $130,000 hush money payment to adult movie actor Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 US elections. However, he has denied any wrongdoing regarding the payments that he made ahead of elections that saw him become the 45th US President. Regardless, the indictment would upend the current presidential race as he eyes re-election.

Trump lashed out at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office and called the indictment “political persecution and election interference”. He went on to rage against prosecutors, and Democratic party members, and pledged that the indictment would impact US President Joe Biden.

In line with the Manhattan DA office’s statement, surrendering for arraignment means that authorities would take Trump’s fingerprints, and photographs and even get handcuffed. It is to note that Trump’s lawyers had said that the 76-year-old would surrender for arraignment if he was indicted.

The latest indictment against Donald Trump came after his rocky tenure in the White House where he survived two impeachments and kept prosecutors at bay over the turn of events that led to the US Capitol attack in 2021, missing classified files which were seized from his private Florida residence.
