The cloned sheep was named after American country music legend Dolly Parton. The scientists behind the breakthrough chose the name because Dolly had been created from a mammary gland cell.
Why was Dolly the sheep so important?
Dolly was part of research at the Roslin Institute in Scotland into genetically modified livestock. Scientists wanted to understand how new genes could be introduced into farm animals to give them particular traits that could then be passed on to their offspring.Cloning was an important part of that research. Before Dolly, scientists had successfully cloned animals from embryonic or other early-stage cells, but cloning a mammal from a fully developed adult cell was considered extremely difficult. She was created using the nucleus of a cell taken from the mammary gland of a Finn Dorset sheep. That nucleus was placed inside an egg cell from a Scottish Blackface sheep after its own nucleus had been removed. The resulting embryo was then transferred to a surrogate mother. Dolly was born on 5 July 1996.
How was Dolly cloned?
Dolly's creation involved a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer.In simple terms, scientists removed the nucleus from an egg cell and replaced it with the nucleus from an adult body cell. The egg was then stimulated to begin developing as an embryo.

In 2001, Dolly developed arthritis and was seen walking stiffly. Dolly later developed a serious lung condition. In February 2003, veterinary examinations and a CT scan revealed tumours in her chest. Given her condition and the need for general anaesthesia during the scan, her carers decided to put her to sleep. Dolly was six years old.

Dolly was donated by the Roslin Institute to National Museums Scotland after her death.Since 2003, she has been displayed at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, where visitors can still see the sheep that changed the history of cloning.
