The detail was shared by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who announced Parton’s death at the age of 80 in an emotional video posted to her official Instagram account on August 25. Parton died peacefully in Nashville, with her family confirming her death.

Seaver, who worked as Parton's head of security for more than 20 years after taking over the role from his father Larry, said the singer had personally told him what she wanted years before her death.

Parton had a vivid way of describing it.

She wanted to rest in a “beautiful bed of plush cotton”, a reference to her roots as the daughter of a farmer and to the glamorous rhinestone-heavy outfits that became one of her trademarks.

According to Seaver, Parton had told him that after spending a lifetime wearing heavy rhinestones, she deserved to finally be comfortable and get some rest.

The image was fitting for a performer who never completely separated her public persona from her Tennessee upbringing. She became one of the biggest stars in country music, but her connection to her family, faith and rural roots remained central to her identity.

Her nephew had been asked to announce her death

Seaver's message carried another deeply personal detail. He revealed that Parton had asked him years ago to be the person who would announce her death.

That request, he said, was difficult to fully comprehend until the moment arrived.

Seaver had spent decades protecting Parton, first watching his father perform the role before eventually taking it over himself. He described the announcement as an honour mixed with pride and profound sadness.

For Seaver and his family, however, the loss was much more personal.

He recalled growing up with Parton and described a lifetime of memories with his aunt. At the same time, he acknowledged that millions of other people felt they had their own connection with her.

Parton had recently spoken about her health

Parton's death came after a period in which she had stepped away from touring and spoken publicly about health problems.

Earlier this year, she told fans during an appearance at Dollywood that she had been dealing with some health issues and was taking time to recover. She also spoke about the emotional toll of losing her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage.

Parton insisted at the time that she was not retiring.

She said she was spending her time writing, thinking, praying and preparing for new projects. Her message was clear: she believed there was still more work ahead.

Her representative later confirmed that she died following a brief battle with cancer.

Parton's publicist has confirmed that a small, private funeral service will be held for immediate family members.
