According to Dr Shraddhey Katiyar, an MBBS and MD in internal medicine, inflammation has quietly shifted from being a short-term healing response to a way of life driven by modern habits.
“Inflammation is your body’s ancient survival system,” Dr Katiyar explains. “You cut your skin, it heals you. You fight an infection, it saves you. The problem begins when inflammation never switches off.”
When biology collides with modern living
Dr Shraddhey said chronic inflammation plays a central role in a wide range of lifestyle-related illnesses. These include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, PCOS, autoimmune disorders, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer progression.
"This is not opinion. This is biochemistry. Inflammatory markers like CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α stay elevated when the body is constantly stressed, overfed, under-moved, and under-recovered," he wrote.
How everyday habits keep inflammation switched on
- Ultra-processed foods that spike insulin and oxidative stress
- Excessive omega-6 seed oils that disrupt cell membranes
- Chronic sleep deprivation that raises cortisol
- Prolonged sitting that slows lymphatic circulation
- Constant psychological stress that keeps the immune system activated
- Minimal sunlight exposure affecting vitamin D signalling
- Continuous eating that keeps insulin elevated all day
“The immune system evolved for danger, not comfort,” he notes. “Our biology hasn’t caught up with convenience.”
The symptoms whisper before they scream
According to Dr Shraddhey, chronic inflammation rarely announces itself dramatically in the early stages. Instead, it shows up as persistent fatigue, brain fog, bloating, joint stiffness, slow recovery, mood changes, and stubborn weight gain.
By the time symptoms become severe, significant internal damage may already be underway.
What actually lowers inflammation
There are no shortcuts or miracle fixes, Dr Katiyar stresses. Inflammation comes down through fundamentals, not hacks.
These include prioritising whole foods over packaged meals, eating adequate protein, strength training to produce anti-inflammatory muscle signals, walking daily, sleeping earlier, getting regular sunlight, practising intermittent fasting, and calming the nervous system before turning to supplements.
While nutrients like curcumin, omega-3s, and magnesium can help, they cannot compensate for a chronically unhealthy lifestyle.
The uncomfortable truth
“Inflammation is the price we pay for convenience,” Dr Katiyar says. “Comfort today, disease tomorrow.”
The body, he adds, keeps a strict account. There are no cheat days or negotiations.
Lowering inflammation improves everything—energy levels, hormones, mental health, and longevity. Inflammation itself is not a diagnosis. It is a signal.
Ignore it, and modern disease follows. Respect it, and the body has an extraordinary ability to heal—quietly and powerfully.
