Organic food myths
Organic or washed regular produce: What matters most
Dr Sharma said, “Eating organic or properly washed regular produce can have a positive impact on your health. Studies show that organic foods generally contain fewer pesticides, which can reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. However, the most important factor is not necessarily whether your food is organic, but that you consume fresh fruits and vegetables regularly and wash them properly.”Proper washing reduces pesticide residues
He added, “Even regular fruits and vegetables, if washed thoroughly, can remove 50–80 percent of pesticide residues. For people who can afford it, incorporating organic produce is beneficial, but for those on a budget, focusing on a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is the most practical and effective approach.”Also Read: Aamir, Ranbir Kapoor’s fitness trainer shares how to reduce fat effectively
Tips for washing fruits and vegetables
Experts recommend washing produce under running water and using a brush for firm items like cucumbers and carrots. Soaking leafy greens in water and then rinsing them thoroughly can also remove dirt and chemicals. Dr Sharma advises that washing is often enough to reduce pesticide residues significantly, even for non-organic items.
Balanced diet and mindful eating are key
Dr Sharma highlighted the importance of overall lifestyle and eating habits. “While organic foods are an added advantage, prevention doesn't rely on a single meal or product. Prioritise variety, freshness, and proper washing of your produce, and maintain other healthy lifestyle practices. These steps matter more than spending excessively on organic options alone.”Practical approach for everyday health
For readers on a budget, Dr Sharma suggests including seasonal fruits and vegetables in daily meals, washing them properly, and combining them with whole grains, legumes, and protein sources. Mindful eating, portion control, and regular physical activity complement dietary choices for overall well-being.The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
