Shoe racks can quickly collect dust, mud, dirt and unpleasant odours, especially during the rainy season. Instead of relying on expensive cleaners, a few simple household ingredients can help keep your shoe rack clean and fresh.

1. Start by removing all the shoes

Before cleaning, take out all the shoes and place them in an open, well-ventilated area. Remove loose dust, sand and dirt from the rack using a dry cloth, soft brush or old toothbrush.

2. Use mild soapy water for mud stains

For washable metal, plastic or laminate shoe racks, mix a small amount of mild liquid soap with warm water. Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution, wring it well and wipe the dirty areas.

3. Try white vinegar for bad odour

If your shoe rack has developed a musty or unpleasant smell, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and lightly wipe suitable non-porous surfaces.

Do not use vinegar on untreated wood, natural stone or surfaces that may react to acidic cleaners. Always test the solution on a small hidden area first.

4. Clean corners with an old toothbrush

Dust and mud often settle in narrow gaps that are difficult to reach with a regular cloth. An old, clean toothbrush can help loosen dirt from corners, grooves, hinges and joints.

Once the dirt has been loosened, wipe the area with a slightly damp cloth and allow the rack to dry completely.

5. Let the shoe rack dry properly

After cleaning, keep the rack open and allow it to dry completely before putting the shoes back. Good ventilation is important because trapped moisture can contribute to musty smells and, in some conditions, mould growth.

Avoid closing a damp shoe rack immediately after cleaning.

Things to keep in mind

Always check the material of your shoe rack before using any cleaning solution. Avoid mixing different cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar or other acidic cleaners. For wooden racks, use as little moisture as possible and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

Regularly removing loose dirt, cleaning the rack and allowing shoes to dry before storing them can help prevent dust buildup, stains and unpleasant odours.
