‘Dil Bechara’ director Mukesh Chabbra reveals Sushant Singh Rajput was his ‘first choice’ for the role

Remembering the Late Sushant Singh Rajput, Mukesh Chabbra admitted that Sushant was his first choice for “Dil Bechara”. The casting director turned director, Mukesh opened up about his debut film ‘Dil Bechara’ On Chetan Bhagat's podcast.
The film Dil Bechara is an adaptation of John Green's famous novel, "The Fault in Our Stars". The film starring SSR was released shortly after the actor's unfortunate demise in 2020. Mukesh admitted that despite having a great time working on the film he never revisited it.

Mukesh Chabbra further expressed that he was grateful to have worked with legends like Sushant Singh Rajput, AR Rahman, and Farah Khan, among several others in his first-ever directorial venture.


When asked about the casting of the film, Mukesh Chabbra told Chetan Bhagat that he always wanted to make his first film with Sushant Singh Rajput. He also added that he felt that there was a strange universal connection between him and the actor. Mukesh was clear on the fact that it would be either Sushant or Rajkummar Rao as the leading hero for his first film. After hearing the script of the film, Mukesh became more clear about casting Sushant.

Mukesh became emotional talking about ‘Dil Bechara’. It was apparent that Mukesh was still undergoing the emotional jolt that was caused due to SSR's unfortunate demise. His concluding remarks were along the lines of "I don't know what to talk about Dil Bechara."

Mukesh Chabbra didn't direct anything after’Dil Bechara’. The same was Sushant's last film. Before his untimely death, the actor was seen in several other films like Shuddh Desi Romance, Raabta, Drive, Chichchore, and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

The actor died by suicide in 2020.
