Diesel price today May 15

Putting an end to days of speculation, the Centre on Friday announced a Rs 3 per litre increase in petrol and diesel prices with immediate effect. The move has led to an instant rise in fuel rates across the country without any transition period.

Diesel prices in Delhi have increased from Rs 87.67 to Rs 90.67 per litre, with the revised rates taking effect from Friday.

In Kolkata, diesel prices have increased by Rs 3.11, taking the rate to Rs 95.13 per litre. Mumbai also saw a hike of Rs 3.11, with diesel now priced at Rs 93.14 per litre. In Chennai, diesel rates went up by Rs 2.86 to reach Rs 95.25 per litre.

The oil marketing companies (OMCs) are reportedly absorbing losses of nearly Rs 1,000 crore daily because global crude oil prices have risen sharply. Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to curb the fuel consumption by adopting measures such as work from home, online meetings, increased use of electric vehicles and even online classes for schools wherever possible.

Due to the prolonged Middle East conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, the global crude oil prices have shot up. The Centre has repeatedly asserted that there is no fuel shortage in the country and no plan to introduce rationing of petrol, diesel or LPG.

The new fuel prices have come into effect across the country, although retail rates may differ from state to state due to variations in local VAT and dealer commissions. The hike is likely to directly affect transport expenses, inflation outlook, and household budgets.
