A video claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an investment scheme promising a monthly income of Rs 25 lakh has gone viral on social media. However, the government has confirmed that the video is fake and created using artificial intelligence (AI).

In the viral clip, PM Modi is purportedly seen promoting an investment platform that allegedly offers earnings of Rs 85,000 per day—around Rs 25 lakh per month—with an initial investment of just Rs 22,000. The video also falsely claims that users can earn the money without any prior experience or work.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed the claims, warning citizens not to fall for the scam. "A digitally manipulated video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing rounds on the internet wherein he is promoting an investment platform, guaranteeing citizens of a monthly income of Rs 25 lakhs on an initial investment of Rs 22,000," PIB said in a post on X.

PIB further clarified: "This video is fake and AI-generated. The Prime Minister has not endorsed any such investment scheme or platform."

The government also urged people to remain vigilant against phishing scams that use fake endorsements by public figures to lure victims into fraudulent investments. "BEWARE of phishing scams that could lead to financial losses. Do not click any suspicious links or share OTPs with unknown people. Help stop misinformation by reporting suspicious content related to the Central Government to PIB Fact Check."

Cyber fraud cases continue to rise

The warning comes amid a sharp rise in cyber fraud cases across the country.

According to data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, nearly 28 lakh cyber fraud cases involving losses of about Rs 22,931 crore were reported in 2025. Separately, The Indian Express reported that 1.85 lakh cyber fraud complaints were registered in the first six months of this year in Uttar Pradesh, the highest among all states. Maharashtra followed with 1.58 lakh complaints, Karnataka with 1.21 lakh, Gujarat with 97,937, and Bihar with 93,137.

What is a phishing scam?

A phishing scam is a type of cybercrime in which fraudsters impersonate trusted individuals, government agencies, banks, or companies to trick people into revealing sensitive information or transferring money.

Scammers often use fake websites, emails, text messages, WhatsApp forwards, or AI-generated videos featuring celebrities and political leaders to make their claims appear legitimate.
