Dhurandhar actor Rakesh Bedi says he visited Javed Akhtar home for free alcohol, shares Saath Saath payment story

Actor Rakesh Bedi is currently witnessing a resurgence in popularity following his performance in Dhurandhar: The Revenge, directed by Aditya Dhar. The film’s success has also brought renewed attention to memories from his early days in the industry.

Recently, filmmaker Farah Khan visited Rakesh Bedi’s home along with her chef Dilip and shared a video on her YouTube channel. During the visit, Farah introduced him to viewers as “Dhurandhar ka main hero” and noted that although they have known each other for years, they were meeting again after a long gap.

Recalling her teenage years, Farah said she was around 15 when Bedi, then about 25, was studying at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

She fondly remembered those days, saying, “FTII se yeh log roz aate the Javed uncle aur Honey aunty ke ghar free ka khaana aur free ki daaru peene, aate the wahan par toh we used to meet all of them.”

Farah further said Bedi often came with a close group of friends that included Farooq Shaikh, Satish Shah, Neena Gupta and Supriya Pathak. She added that it was an old friendship and that they were meeting after a long time, while Bedi noted that the routine continued for several years.

Following the death of Satish Shah in 2025, Bedi had also shared a tribute on social media, writing, “How much I miss you, my friend. You are etched in me,” along with a photograph of the late actor.

At present, Bedi is receiving strong audience response for his role in Dhurandhar: The Revenge, where he plays Pakistani politician Jameel Jamali. His dialogues from the film have gone viral, contributing to its box office success. The film has earned over Rs 1,750 crore worldwide and Rs 1,000 crore net in India.

Early career struggles and unpaid work

During the interaction, Farah Khan also spoke about the initial phase of their careers, recalling that actors like Rakesh Bedi were not always paid for their work in films.

She asked, “Rakesh, do you get paid now? I guess you do. When they all started their careers, nobody used to pay them.”

Rakesh Bedi responded, “The times were different.”

When Farah asked about his experience working in the Deepti Naval and Farooq Sheikh-starrer Saath Saath, directed by Raman Kumar and produced by Dilip Dhawan, Bedi revealed that it was the only film for which he was not paid at all.

“I did not even get paid for the conveyance. In fact, many a times, we used to take food from our home,” he said.

Saath Saath revolves around Avinash Verma, an idealistic young man, and his wife Geetanjali Gupta, daughter of a textile mill owner, as they navigate the challenges of married life.
