Amid CJP NEET protests, Dharmendra Pradhan reiterates that NEET will be fully computer-based from 2027

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical admissions will transition entirely to a computer-based format starting 2027, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced. This move will eliminate the traditional pen-and-paper OMR system used in the exam.

End of OMR-Based Exam System

With this change, candidates will no longer mark answers on physical OMR sheets. Instead, they will respond to questions through a digital interface on a computer. The shift aims to modernise the examination process.

Focus on Security and Transparency

The minister stated that the decision has been taken to “strengthen the examination process and address concerns related to security and transparency.” The move is expected to enhance monitoring and reduce risks associated with manual handling of answer sheets.

Exam Pattern to Remain Unchanged

Despite the change in format, the structure of NEET UG will remain the same. The exam will continue to carry 720 marks, with questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The academic pattern and marking scheme will not be altered.

Students Must Adapt to Digital Testing

The transition to CBT means aspirants preparing for NEET 2027 will need to become comfortable with computer-based exams. Practicing through online mock tests will be essential to improve speed, accuracy, and familiarity with the digital format.

Changes in Preparation Strategy

Preparation methods are also expected to evolve. Students will need to shift from OMR-based practice to screen-based tests, which could influence time management and answering techniques.

Part of Broader Exam Reforms

The shift to a fully computer-based format is part of wider efforts to improve examination systems. The government has previously introduced measures, including committees and investigations, to address concerns related to exam management and integrity.
