Dense fog disrupts flight operations at Delhi's IGI airport; IndiGo, Air India, others issue travel advisory

As dense fog enveloped the national capital and neighbouring regions, Delhi Airport on Monday issued a passenger advisory stating that flight operations are being carried out under CAT III conditions, which may lead to delays or cancellations.

"Flight operations are currently being conducted under CAT III conditions due to dense fog, which may result in delays or cancellations. Our ground teams are on-site and actively assisting passengers to ensure a smooth travel experience. For the latest flight updates, please contact your respective airlines. We sincerely regret for any inconvenience caused," said Delhi Airport in its advisory.

Airlines issue travel advisory:

Amid dense fog reducing visibility in the national capital, IndiGo said, "Delhi and Hindon (Airport) continue to remain wrapped in chilly winter air and lingering fog this morning. The fluctuating visibility has led to changes in flight schedules, and operations may be slower than usual as conditions evolve. Our teams on-ground are prioritising safety and compliance with visibility requirements. Once the weather settles, operations will gradually stabilise, and flights will depart as planned. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We look forward to welcoming you onboard soon."

In addition, our ‘FogCare’ initiative allows passengers booked on certain flights that are likely to be affected during the fog window to receive advance alerts on their registered phone numbers, with the option to change their flights without any extra payment or seek a full refund on their bookings without any penalty," said Tata-owned Air India in its travel advisory.

Orange alert in national capital

Delhi is set for another difficult start to the week as the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for very dense fog on Monday, with temperatures expected to remain chilly and visibility severely affected across the national capital. The weather warning comes as pollution levels continue to remain dangerously high.

The national capital’s air quality deteriorated to the ‘severe’ category on Monday, with the AQI crossing 400, according to the CPCB’s Sameer app.

Under CPCB guidelines, an AQI between 0 and 50 is classified as “good”, 51–100 “satisfactory”, 101–200 “moderate”, 201–300 “poor”, 301–400 “very poor”, and 401–500 “severe”.

The weather department expects temperatures on Monday to hover around 22°C during the day and fall to nearly 7°C at night.
