#DelhiWeather trends on Twitter as NCR wakes up to fog in hottest month of year

The National Capital has been experiencing some freaky weather conditions, but most citizens did not expect to wake up to a foggy morning in May. In the city, the month of May tends to be the hottest month of the year. The mean temperature for the month is usually recorded at 39.5 degrees Celsius.

Delhi experienced heavy rains since the start of the week, leading to low visibility conditions and a minimum temperature of 15.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the month in at least 13 years.

The all-time low of 15.2 degrees Celsius – since the weather keeping started – was recorded on May 2, 1982.


Citizens took to Twitter to marvel at the strange weather. Several users took the opportunity to share images and videos of the shallow fog which was enveloping the city. Many even compared it to the fog seen during the months of November and December.

One user wrote, "Is everyone in Delhi waking up to a May FOG? ", while another wrote, "Fog on a May morning in Delhi. Never ever before have I experienced this in over 4 decades of living in this city. This is surreal!".

According to weather department officials, the high moisture content in the air, calm winds and a significant difference between the daytime and nighttime temperatures created conditions that were favourable for fog formation.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded 30 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an alert and predicted fresh rainfall and hailstorms for the next five days across Delhi-NCR.


The Met office has predicted below-normal maximum temperatures and fewer heatwave days in northwest India in May.
