Delhi's 'deadliest' roads: These five roads in National Capital have the highest number of fatal accidents
New Delhi’s vast road network, spanning nearly 1,400km, hides a chilling statistic: just five major corridors account for nearly 28% of the city’s fatal crashes. Data from 2025 highlights a grim total of 1,578 fatal accidents, with deaths striking...

'Deadly' Delhi Road Stretches
The trail of danger extends beyond the ring roads to three other critical arteries. GT Karnal Road, a vital commercial link connecting North Delhi to Haryana, saw 95 fatal crashes. Rohtak Road, which stretches from central Delhi towards the Tikri Border, recorded 64 fatalities, while Mathura Road, the primary north-south corridor through Ashram and Nizamuddin, saw 31 deaths. These roads often double as both urban streets and national highways, forcing heavy trucks to share space with local two-wheelers and pedestrians, frequently without physical safety barriers.Plight of the Vulnerable Pedestrian
The most alarming trend is the concentration of pedestrian fatalities on these high-speed roads. In 2025 alone, Ring Road saw 50 pedestrian deaths, followed by Outer Ring Road with 38. Experts attribute this to a fundamental mismatch in urban design: roads built for fast, uninterrupted vehicle movement are now surrounded by markets, metro stations, and residential clusters. Safe crossings are often spaced too far apart, leading many to cross multi-lane traffic at grade. Vulnerable road users are frequently "pushed into life-threatening crashes" near major hubs due to missing crash cushions, poor hazard markings, and inadequate signage. The Path to Redesign
The concentration of fatalities offers a unique opportunity for targeted intervention. Traffic officials have begun daily awareness programs for drivers, ranging from DTC bus staff to two-wheeler riders, to discourage reckless habits. High-risk corridors have been shortlisted for physical upgrades, including better speed control and safer merge zones. Furthermore, a proposal has been sent to the education department to introduce a road safety curriculum in schools, aiming to instill driving ethics in future generations before they even hit the road.(With TOI inputs)
