Delhi NCR rain: Heavy rain, dust storms bring big relief from scorching heat; IMD predicts more showers till May 31

Rain lashed Delhi and adjoining areas on Thursday bringing much needed relief from the relentless heatwave of last few days.

Several parts of Delhi witnessed heavy rainfall, leading to a noticeable drop in temperature and easing the discomfort caused by high humidity and extreme heat. At the same time, strong dust storms and gusty winds swept through Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, affecting visibility and disrupting traffic movement in several areas.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain and strong wind activity are expected to continue across Delhi-NCR till May 31. The weather department has also predicted cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and intermittent rainfall over the next few days.


Delhi residents endured intense sunshine and hot winds throughout the day on Thursday. However, weather conditions changed rapidly by evening as dark clouds gathered over the city, followed by widespread showers in many areas. The rainfall brought down temperatures significantly, making the weather cooler and more pleasant.

While rainfall provided relief in Delhi, nearby NCR cities such as Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad experienced powerful dust storms accompanied by strong winds. The sudden weather activity reduced visibility on roads and caused inconvenience for commuters. Some areas later received light showers, helping improve weather conditions.

IMD Predicts More Rain, Temperature Drop

The IMD has indicated that weather fluctuations are likely to persist across Delhi-NCR in the coming days due to the influence of a western disturbance, cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining regions, and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologists believe these systems could trigger additional rainfall and thunderstorms, bringing temperatures down by nearly 5 to 7 degrees Celsius after May 29. The expected dip in temperature is likely to offer continued relief from the ongoing heatwave gripping the national capital region.

Residents have also been advised to remain cautious, as strong winds and heavy rain could impact daily life and traffic movement in some areas.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala between May 28 and June 3, while its arrival in Delhi is currently projected around June 27.

Despite the weather relief, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category on Wednesday. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 284, Wazirpur 263, Rohini 251, Narela 254, and Pusa 216.
