Lawyers’ strike begins over police witness deposition

Lawyers are protesting against the practice of police personnel presenting evidence in courts virtually from police stations. The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA), in a statement issued on Saturday, confirmed the strike. “We firmly stand on our demand and reiterate that police personnel have to appear only in physical mode in the courts for the purpose of deposition/evidence,” it said.

The move follows a circular dated September 4 from the Delhi Police Commissioner’s office, which allowed examination of police witnesses through audio-video electronic means from police stations. Earlier, on September 2, representatives of the Coordination Committee and the Bar Council of Delhi met the Union Home Minister to oppose an August 13 notification by the Lt Governor designating police stations as places for recording evidence. The lawyers’ body said they were assured that a clarification would be issued, but no withdrawal has been announced so far.

Separate Delhi Police traffic advisory

Separately, Delhi Police issued an advisory regarding traffic disruptions in the city due to waterlogging and diversions. Rising Yamuna levels and waterlogging near Nigam Bodh Ghat have disrupted traffic on the Outer Ring Road stretch between Chandgi Ram Akhara and Hanuman Mandir.

Diversions have been placed at Wazirabad towards Signature Bridge, Chandgi Ram Akhara towards IP College Red Light, and IP College Red Light towards Shamnath Marg. The advisory also mentioned pressure on Bhagwan Mahaveer Marg, KN Kantju Marg, Kanjhawala Road via UER-II, Outer Ring Road, and other approach roads, particularly during evening peak hours.

Police have urged commuters to use alternate routes, prefer Metro, and follow the instructions of traffic personnel at diversions. Motorists have been asked to remain patient and cooperate with authorities for smoother traffic management.
