A 20-year-old man, along with an accomplice, robbed his father of Rs 10 lakh at gunpoint in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar. Initially, the police thought the victim was cooking a story but when they scanned the CCTVs, one of the cameras captured his imag...

In Delhi's bustling Mukherjee Nagar, a businessman was threatened by two masked men and they waved a pistol and decamped with Rs 10 lakh cash. He immediately dialled 112 and informed the police and a manhunt was launched to catch the culprits. But the case took an astonishing turn when the police caught the culprit and he was none other than the businessman’s own son, reports TOI's Devanshi Mehta.

During interrogation, the young man confessed that he had plotted the robbery with a friend out of frustration. Upset that his father continually refused to give him money or an allowance, he said he carried out the heist to “teach his father a lesson.”

The incident occurred around 9 am on Tuesday when two masked men, riding a scooty, allegedly intercepted the Mukherjee Nagar businessman in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar. The victim was on his way to deliver the money to his brother-in-law on behalf of his business partner.

Initial doubts emerged

When the businessman went to the police to file a complaint, investigators were initially sceptical. “The initial theory was that thecomplainant might have concocted the story to explain away the missing Rs 10 lakh,” a senior police officer was quoted by TOI as saying.

To verify his claims, police launched a technical surveillance operation. Over several hours, teams reviewed footage from 120 CCTV cameras across the area to track the duo and get a clear view of their faces. The breakthrough came when a mask slipped, revealing one of the suspects’ faces and cracking the case wide open.

Police began tracking the two-wheeler's movement through a “CCTV corridor” as the suspects wove through the crowded streets of Mukherjee Nagar and the chaos of Laxmi Nagar. Their faces hidden behind masks and helmets, they repeatedly vanished into blind spots or merged into streams of similar-looking vehicles, making it a gruelling cat-and-mouse game for the officers.

Finally, the 121st camera provided the critical clue. Near Anand Vihar, thinking they had escaped unnoticed, the robbers stopped in a secluded spot. The rider removed his mask to catch his breath, and the nearby camera captured a clear image. Using this footage, combined with ground intelligence and informers, the police identified and arrested the man on Wednesday.

The investigation took a shocking twist during the identification process. When the complainant was asked to identify the robber, he realized that the “criminal” was none other than his 20-year-old son.
