In the video that brought the matter to light, a man in a T-shirt and a woman wearing a traditional kurta-salwar are seen complaining that the restaurant staff refused to let them in because of their Indian attire. The couple also accused the staff of misbehaving with them.
The clip quickly spread across social media, with many people expressing anger over the idea that Indian clothing was being looked down upon, especially in India.
Reacting to the backlash, Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra said the restaurant owner has now apologised through a public video.
“Our Chief Minister saw the video this morning and immediately asked us to investigate,” Mishra said. “Our district magistrate and officials spoke with the restaurant owner. He has confirmed that no such dress code policy will be enforced from now on.”
A notice has also been put up outside the restaurant clearly stating that guests in Indian wear are welcome.
Raksha Bandhan Discount as Apology
In a gesture of goodwill, the restaurant has announced a special offer for Raksha Bandhan, women wearing Indian clothes will receive a discount as an apology for the incident.“Such discrimination against Indian attire, especially in public places like restaurants, is completely unacceptable,” Mishra added.
CM Rekha Gupta Orders Probe
Earlier in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to carry out an investigation and take necessary action.The entire episode has triggered a broader conversation about cultural respect and the freedom to wear traditional outfits in modern spaces.
