Heatwave conditions likely to ease after April 28

Heatwave conditions have been recorded at many places across Delhi for the third consecutive day and are expected to continue until April 27. A shift in lower-level easterly winds is likely to bring down maximum temperatures, leading to a reduction in heatwave conditions from April 28.

No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next two days, followed by a fall of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over the subsequent three days and a rise of about 2 degrees thereafter. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain above normal for the next three days and return to normal levels later.

Recent temperature trends

During the past 24 hours, no major change was observed in maximum temperatures, while minimum temperatures rose by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures ranged between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures were between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Minimum temperatures were above normal by 1.6 to 3 degrees Celsius at many places and appreciably above normal by 3.1 to 5 degrees Celsius at isolated locations. Maximum temperatures were markedly above normal by more than 5 degrees Celsius at several places and appreciably above normal by 3.1 to 5 degrees Celsius elsewhere.

A western disturbance persists as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies at about 5.8 km above mean sea level along longitude 78°E to the north of latitude 32°N. Upper air cyclonic circulations continue over northwest Uttar Pradesh and east Uttar Pradesh at around 1.5 km above mean sea level.

The subtropical westerly jet stream, with wind speeds of around 80 knots at 12.6 km above mean sea level, continues over east and northeast India. The cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan has weakened, along with the associated trough.

Public advisory amid heat conditions

Moderate heat conditions are expected to remain tolerable for the general public but may pose health concerns for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.

Residents are advised to avoid prolonged heat exposure, wear light, loose and cotton clothing, and cover their heads with cloth, hats or umbrellas. Adequate hydration is recommended even in the absence of thirst. Authorities have also advised keeping fire extinguishers at home and in vehicles.
