Delhi-NCR witnessed heavy rain on Wednesday morning amid a yellow alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has forecast more rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next five days, while neighbouring Gurugram continues to grapple with the aftermath of intense monsoon showers that triggered widespread flooding and traffic chaos.

According to the IMD, Delhi will witness a generally cloudy sky on Wednesday and Thursday, with intermittent spells of light rain, isolated moderate showers, thunderstorms, lightning and winds blowing at speeds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph.

Delhi weather forecast

The IMD has forecast continued wet weather across Delhi over the coming days.

On July 9, the city is likely to receive light to moderate rain at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds during the morning and forenoon. Another spell of very light to light rain is expected during the night.

The weather department will downgrade the warning to a Green Alert (No Warning) on July 10 and July 11. However, cloudy skies are expected to persist, with the possibility of very light to light rain, thunderstorms and lightning during the forenoon or afternoon on both days.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and periods of strong winds over the next three days.

Gurugram hit by heavy monsoon rain

Meanwhile, the first spell of heavy monsoon showers on Tuesday brought normal life to a standstill in Gurugram. Heavy rainfall led to extensive waterlogging, road cave-ins and massive traffic jams across the city. The main carriageway of the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48) near Narsinghpur caved in after the downpour, forcing authorities to shut two lanes. The closure resulted in long traffic snarls between Hero Honda Chowk and the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The rainfall also exposed the city's recurring waterlogging issues, with several major roads and highways submerged. Residents shared videos on social media showing flooded streets, stranded vehicles and severe traffic congestion.

The downpour coincided with school closing hours, worsening the traffic situation across Gurugram. School buses and students were among those most affected by the gridlock.

In one incident, a school bus slipped into an open drain on NH-48. Fortunately, no students were on board and no injuries were reported.

Traffic police personnel remained deployed across the city despite the heavy rain to regulate vehicular movement and ease congestion.
