The residents of Delhi-NCR woke up with a sigh of relief as rain and strong winds lashed the region on Wednesday. More thunderstorms, rain and dust storms might hit the capital today in the later part of the day. According to the IMD, a western disturbance would trigger a sharp change in weather across the national capital and neighbouring regions.

Delhi is likely to see more rain towards the end of the month and clear skies are likely to return from May 1 and the mercury is expected to start gradually rising. It may increase to 40-42 degrees Celsius by May 2. “However, there is possibility of very light rain and thunderstorms on May 3 and 4,” said the official.

Yellow alert for south Delhi

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for parts of northwest Delhi, west Delhi, north Delhi, south Delhi and southeast Delhi. On the other hand, an orange alert has been sounded for southwest Delhi, with officials warning of thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching up to 60 kmph, along with the possibility of lightning and brief spells of rain.

The experts have said that Delhi-NCR region must prepare for dust storms in the coming days, attributing the changing conditions to a cyclonic circulation prevailing over central Pakistan and adjoining regions of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab. The system, according to experts, is likely to transport dust from the desert regions of Rajasthan towards Delhi.
