The IMD has forecast that cold wave will affect isolated places in the national capital till January 6, Tuesday
Delhi is likely to witness clear skies with shallow fog at a few places expected during morning hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are likely to be in the range of 18°C to 20°C and 6°C to 8°C respectively, the weather agency said. The minimum and the maximum temperatures will be near normal over Delhi. The IMD has forecast that cold wave will affect isolated places in the national capital till January 6, Tuesday. "The predominant surface wind is likely to be from the northwest direction with wind speed reaching up to 15 kmph during the morning hours. The wind speed will increase, becoming up to 22 kmph from the northwest direction in the afternoon. The wind speed will decrease, becoming less than 12 kmph from the northwest direction during the evening and night, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh's Noida, the IMD said mist or fog would occur during morning hours on Tuesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 18d degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius respectively. As far as Gurugram is concerned, clear skies have been forecasted for the day with maximum and minimum temperatures to be around 17 degrees Celsius and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Travel advisory for Delhi passengers

Delhi Airport in an advisory said flight operations are currently being conducted under CAT III conditions due to dense fog, resulting in delays. "Passengers are requested to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight information," the airport said.


IndiGo in an advisory said low visibility and fog over Delhi, Amritsar, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Varanasi, Ranchi and Hindon (Airport) may impact flight schedules. "We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly. We request that you stay updated on your flight status via our website or app. Please be assured that our teams are here to assist you at every step and provide full support," the airline said in a travel update on X.

Cold wave conditions in Punjab, Chandigarh

The IMD in its latest weather bulletin said cold day conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets of East Rajasthan from January 5 to January 7, and also in Jharkhand on January 5. Similar weather conditions are expected in West Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal during the same period, from January 5 to 7. Cold day conditions are also likely over Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal on January 5 and 6, 2026.

Cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 6 to 9. West Rajasthan may experience cold wave conditions from January 8 to 10, while East Rajasthan is likely to be affected from January 6 to 10. Chhattisgarh may witness cold wave conditions from January 6 to 8, and Jharkhand is expected to experience similar conditions on January 6 and 7, 2026.

Schools closed in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi

Schools across several states have been ordered shut as severe cold wave conditions continue to grip large parts of the country. In Uttar Pradesh, schools up to Class 8 have been ordered closed in several districts amid cold wave and dense fog conditions, with the closure extended till January 14 in many areas. District administrations in the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, have also announced temporary closures of schools as low visibility and plummeting temperatures pose safety risks for students.

In Delhi, many schools are currently observing scheduled winter vacations, though authorities have indicated that extensions may be considered if cold and fog conditions persist.

Delhi AQI update

A thick layer of smog continued to blanket the National Capital on Tuesday, with air quality remaining in the 'poor' category across several parts of the city, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

According to CPCB readings, Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was 288, placing it in the 'poor' category.

Several hotspots recorded even higher pollution levels, with Anand Vihar at 343, RK Puram at 324, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at 313, Dwarka at 307, Ashok Vihar at 302 and ITO at 286.

For January 7, the IMD has predicted mainly clear skies in Delhi with shallow fog during morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures over Delhi are likely to be in the range of 18°C to 20°C and 6°C to 8°C respectively.
