Delhi Metro lift incident: Woman’s claim of man urinating sparks outrage online at Kalkaji Metro Station

A viral video showing an elderly man urinating inside a lift at Delhi’s Kalkaji Metro Station in front of two women has sparked widespread outrage on social media and renewed debate over civic sense and public safety in public transport spaces.

The incident was shared on Instagram by Deepshika Mehta, who claimed she confronted the man at the metro platform after the incident. According to her post, the man responded, “Tum karlo jo karna hai” or “Do what you want.”

“Imagine entering a metro lift and seeing a man casually peeing inside it in front of two girls. This happened at Kalkaji Metro Station,” Mehta wrote in the caption accompanying the video.

Delhi Police and DMRC respond

Following the circulation of the video online, Delhi Police and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation issued statements addressing the matter.

Delhi Police said the incident occurred on May 15, 2026, at around 9:40 PM. According to the police inquiry conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro), the elderly man was travelling from Jamia Metro Station to Faridabad Metro Station.

Police stated that during the interchange at Kalkaji Metro Station, the man reportedly suffered a medical emergency. According to the statement, he attempted to locate a nearby toilet but was unable to find one in time and eventually urinated into a bottle while inside the lift.

Authorities said some passengers objected to the act and alerted DMRC staff, after which action was taken.

The man was later penalised by DMRC under Section 59 of the DMRC Act for creating a nuisance.

DMRC also stated that necessary action had been taken and appealed to passengers to cooperate in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within metro premises.

Social media reactions

The video, which has received nearly two million views, drew strong reactions online.

Several users criticised the act, calling it inappropriate and raising concerns about passenger safety and comfort, particularly with women present inside the lift.

Others pointed to the man’s age and the reported medical emergency, arguing that metro authorities should improve accessibility and visibility of toilets at interchange stations. Some users also noted that while public toilets are available at DMRC stations, commuters often complain that they are difficult to locate during transfers or remain locked late at night.

In a follow-up video, Mehta said that even in cases of medical emergencies, people should maintain basic civic sense.

She also urged greater awareness about the use of adult diapers in situations involving elderly passengers or medical conditions.

Mehta said her intention behind sharing the video was to “create awareness about public safety and basic civic behaviour”.

“No one should feel uncomfortable or unsafe while using public transport,” she added.
