The proposed Northern Bullet Train Corridor could reduce travel time between Delhi and Lucknow to just 2 hours and 12 minutes, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on October 31, PTI reported. The announcement followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's approval of the proposed high-speed rail corridor, which is expected to connect major cities across northern and eastern India.

Vaishnaw shared the proposed journey times while speaking in Varanasi ahead of the flagging off of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Varanasi and New Delhi. The estimates suggest that the high-speed network could substantially cut travel time on some of the country's major intercity routes. However, these are projected journey durations, not confirmed train timings or a published operational schedule.

Delhi-Lucknow bullet train: Journey time projected at 2 hours 12 minutes

The proposed Delhi-Lucknow journey is expected to take 2 hours and 12 minutes once the corridor becomes operational. The estimate places the capital and Uttar Pradesh's state capital within little over two hours of each other by high-speed rail.

The minister also outlined travel time projections for other sections of the proposed network. Delhi to Agra could take 59 minutes, while the journey to Kanpur is expected to take 1 hour and 45 minutes. Travelling from Lucknow to Varanasi could take 1 hour and 21 minutes, while the Varanasi-Delhi journey has been projected at 3 hours and 35 minutes, PTI reported.

These figures indicate the potential travel-time reductions envisaged under the plan. The Railways has not yet released a final timetable or confirmed how services will be operated across the proposed route.

Delhi-Lucknow bullet train to cut travel time by over four hours

The proposed bullet train could bring down the Delhi-Lucknow journey from the present six hours or more to just 2 hours and 12 minutes. The Vande Bharat Express (22426) currently takes approximately 6 hours and 25 minutes to cover the route. At the projected duration, the high-speed train could save passengers around 4 hours and 13 minutes.

Other prominent services on the route also take more than six hours. The IRCTC Tejas Express (82502) completes the journey in approximately 6 hours and 35 minutes, while the Swarna Shatabdi Express (12004) takes around 6 hours and 50 minutes.

This means the proposed Northern Bullet Train Corridor could substantially reduce travel time between the two cities compared with existing rail services. However, the 2-hour-and-12-minute estimate is indicative, and the final journey duration will depend on the approved route and operational plan.

Northern Bullet Train Corridor route: Cities connecting Delhi to Guwahati

The proposed corridor will start in Delhi and pass through Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Siliguri before extending to Guwahati in Assam. The route is expected to link important urban centres across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, while providing a high-speed rail connection towards the Northeast.

The proposed network could also improve access to major tourism destinations. Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, receives visitors from across India and overseas. Ayodhya and Varanasi are prominent religious destinations, while Prayagraj is known for the Triveni Sangam and the Kumbh Mela.

Patna could serve as a key connection for travellers exploring Bihar's historical and Buddhist heritage. Siliguri, meanwhile, is an important transit point for people travelling to Darjeeling, Sikkim and other parts of the eastern Himalayas. The proposed extension to Guwahati would take the high-speed network further into the Northeast.

Vaishnaw said the proposed project would be developed using India's manufacturing and construction capabilities, with the work extending from the construction of pillars to the installation of girders. He indicated that Indian engineers, workers and welders would play a central role in building the network.

The minister also said the project was intended to serve a wider section of the population, including young people, middle-income households and artisans working in small-scale industries. He indicated that ticket prices would be economical and lower than airfares, although no fare structure has been announced yet.

What has the government announced about India's high-speed rail network?

The Northern Corridor announcement follows the Centre's broader plans to expand high-speed rail connectivity. In its February 3, 2026, release on the Union Budget 2026-27, the Ministry of Railways outlined proposed corridors, including Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri. The government had then projected a journey time of around 3 hours and 50 minutes between Delhi and Varanasi, and approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes between Varanasi and Siliguri.

The latest estimates shared by Vaishnaw include a 3-hour-and-35-minute journey between Varanasi and Delhi, which differs from the earlier budget projection. Both sets of figures are indicative, and the final travel times will depend on the approved route and project details.

While the Prime Minister's approval of the Northern Corridor has been announced, several aspects of the project remain unclear. The government has not yet provided a detailed alignment, confirmed station locations, construction cost, implementation timeline or expected date of commencement.
