Kajal Chaudhary's family has now alleged that she been subjected to dowry harassment by in-laws despite the couple having a love marriage in 2023. In contrast, police said the assault stemmed from frequent arguments between the couple over financial matters. On the day of the attack, the couple, both natives of Ganaur in Haryana, had a fight following which Kajal dialled her brother when the tensions escalated. While she was on the phone, Ankur hit her on the head repeatedly with the dumbbell.ALSO READ: UGC rules explained: What are the new regulations, how can students file a complaint and what happens after that? He had reportedly slammed Kajal's head against the frame of a door before using the dumbbell to hit her. Later, he dialled Nikhil and revealed that his sister had collapsed due to his assault, the report said.
Kajal's brother Nikhil, a constable posted at Parliament Street police station, told TOI, "Kajal called me up when the argument escalated," Nikhil said, adding that while he was still on the phone with his sister, Ankur began hitting her on the head with the dumbbell. "Five minutes later, Ankur called me up and bluntly informed me of the assault," Nikhil said.
"The couple might have taken some loans and often had disputes related to this and other household expenses. On Jan 22, Ankur banged Kajal's head against the frame of a door before attacking her with the dumbbell," a Delhi Police officer told TOI.
Hours after the assault, Delhi Police had arrested Ankur based on a complaint filed by Nikhil. At that time, a case was registered at Mohan Garden police station against him under charges of attempted murder, which will now be converted into murder charges, the officer added.

Dowry allegations surface
Nikhil said Kajal and Ankur were in love and had got married in 2023. However, Ankur’s family allegedly demanded dowry from his family. “Ankur’s family started passing comments regarding dowry almost immediately after the wedding. She then used to live at Ganaur (in Sonipat) with her in-laws. But due to such disputes, they (Ankur and Kajal) shifted to a flat in Mohan Garden,” Nikhil told the Indian Express.“But after some time, they returned to Ganaur as Ankur insisted on staying with his family. They used to come to the Mohan Garden flat while she was on duty in Delhi. This time they came on January 20 for the Republic Day celebrations,” he added.
