Delhi: Burqa-clad stalker throws 19-year-old woman off roof; Locals outraged, market shut in protest

A 19-year-old woman named Neha died on Monday after being pushed from the fifth-floor terrace of her home in Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area.

Police said she was attacked by a man named Taufiq, who had been stalking her. He was arrested on Tuesday night in Uttar Pradesh after a search operation by six police teams across two states.

The shocking incident took place in the Ashok Nagar locality.


CCTV footage showed that the accused entered Neha’s building wearing a burqa (a veil). He went to the terrace, strangled her with her dupatta (scarf), and then pushed her off after an argument. She fell onto a pile of bricks and was seriously injured. Locals rushed her to the hospital, but she passed away a few hours later.

Neha’s father told police that he was on his way to the terrace when he saw Taufiq attacking her. Her mother was standing on the balcony, and her elder sister was asleep. Clothes were found scattered on the terrace, suggesting Neha was doing laundry when the attack happened.

After the incident, the area saw heavy police presence. Locals were angry, and Mandoli Road market remained shut in protest. Market officials said they would check the identity of all their staff and would no longer hire anyone without valid documents.

The police had earlier filed a case of attempted murder but changed it to murder after Neha’s death. Taufiq, the accused, lived with his brother in Delhi while his family is from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. He used to work in a warehouse and also helped at a grocery shop in the neighbourhood.
