Deepti Sharma says there was prior warning; England captain calls it 'lying'

England captain Heather Knight said there were no warnings given by Team India before the runout of Charlie Dean in the final ODI.

This debate doesn't seem to be dying down soon. India bowler Deepti Sharma on Monday claimed her team gave a warning to England's Charlie Dean before running her out at the non-striker's end in the final ODI, but England captain Heather Knight said the visiting team was "lying' about it.

It was Sharma who reopened the matter by telling reporters that her run out of Dean was planned by the team because the batter was "leaving the crease" repeatedly.

"We have even warned her. So, whatever we did was according to the rules and regulations. We had told the umpires too. But she was still doing it, so we had no other option," she said.

But England captain Heather Knight said no warnings were needed and none were given, and that Team India should not be "lying" about it.

"The game is over, Charlie was dismissed legitimately. India were deserved winners of the match and the series. But no warnings were given. They don't need to be given, so it hasn't made the dismissal any less legitimate," she posted to Twitter.

Then in another tweet she added: "But if they're comfortable with the decision to affect the run out, India shouldn't feel the need to justify it by lying about warnings."

The incident happened on Saturday in the third and final ODI between India and England women cricket teams. Sharma ran out Charlie Dean at the non-striker end as she backed up too far before she bowled. Charlie was left in tears, England lost the match by 16 runs and India wrapped up the ODI series 3-0.

Running out a non-striker who wanders out of the crease is well within the rules, but there are some players and experts who still feel it is not in the spirit of the game.
