'Dear X': Anupam Kher writes to Elon Musk after account suspension over copyright violation

Actor Anupam Kher expressed surprise after his X account was temporarily locked despite his adherence to the platform’s rules. Kher, who has been active on the platform since 2007, said he received a notification about the suspension but was unaware of any rule violations. His account has since been restored.

Questions over DMCA violation

Kher shared his concerns in a post on X, stating, "Dear X! Even though my account has been restored I was surprised to see it locked. I have been on this platform since September 2007. Have always been mindful of rules of #X (formerly twitter). Or for that matter any social media copyright rules. So found it a little absurd. Would love to know which post of mine did violate your rules? Thanks! @elonmusk."

He attached a screenshot of the message he received, which stated that his account had been locked due to a complaint under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The notification read, "Your account has been locked because X received a compliant Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Notice for content posted to your X account."

DMCA enforcement on X

Under the DMCA, copyright holders can report content that infringes on their rights. The platform then reviews such reports and removes the flagged material if the complaint is deemed valid. The notification Kher received stated, "Under the DMCA, copyright owners can notify X claiming that a user has infringed their copyrighted works. Upon receipt of a valid DMCA notice, X will remove the identified material."
