Deadly fungus outbreak in US: What is Candida auris, symptoms, who all are at risk as cases rise across 23 states

More than 3,100 cases of Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus capable of causing life-threatening infections, have been reported across 23 US states this year, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC reported 3,130 confirmed cases as of July 18, with Texas recording the highest number of cases at 706, followed by Michigan with 503 cases.

Where does Candida auris spread?

Candida auris is mainly transmitted in healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. The fungus poses a greater threat in these environments because many patients rely on medical equipment such as ventilators, catheters, feeding tubes, and central intravenous lines. These devices can provide a pathway for the fungus to enter the body, increasing the risk of severe infections.

Who is most at risk?

For healthy individuals, the chances of developing a serious Candida auris infection are considered low. However, the risk increases significantly among people who are critically ill, have weakened immune systems.

Patients using ventilators, feeding tubes, catheters, or central intravenous lines are especially at a high risk because the fungus can enter the bloodstream through these devices and cause potentially fatal infections.

Symptoms of Candida auris infection

According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of Candida auris infections can be difficult to differentiate from other serious infections. They may include:

• Chills
• Fatigue
• Low body temperature
• Low blood pressure
• Rapid heart rate
• Certain types of ear infections

Why Candida auris is a growing concern

The groups most vulnerable to invasive Candida auris infections include individuals with weakened immune systems, those undergoing intensive medical care, patients with invasive medical devices, and people with a history of extended antibiotic or antifungal treatment.
