Cyclone Mocha: Reason behind its name, how to track cyclone updates

A storm is brewing over the Bay of Bengal and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that it would intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 10. The cyclonic storm is called "Cyclone Mocha".

Yesterday's low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea lay over as a well marked low pressure area over the same region, IMD stated in "Tropical Weather Outlook" on May 9, 2023.

It is likely to into a depression by today evening over the same region and subsequently into a cyclonic storm on May 10, the IMD stated.


"It is likely to move initially north-northwestwards towards east central Bay of Bengal till May 11. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts," IMD said in its statement.
