The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration is encountering delays in testing food samples linked to four suspected deaths caused by watermelon consumption. Investigators have now run into another hurdle, as watermelons have suddenly vanished from local markets, affecting random sampling efforts.

Sample Testing Delayed

Test results of food items collected from the Dakodia family’s residence in Bhendi Bazaar, including watermelon, raw rice, pulao-biryani, partially consumed dates, and water mixed with a cinnamon-like substance, were expected on Wednesday. However, officials indicated that the reports may take a few more days.

Shortage of Watermelons Hampers Investigation

An FDA official stated, "As a precautionary public measure, we need to test watermelons within a five- to 10-km radius of the incident. But from Wadala to Byculla, there isn't a watermelon to be found to proceed with the investigation."

For proper testing, authorities require around 500 grams of watermelon collected from four different locations near the incident site.

Police Await Forensic Findings

Meanwhile, police officials said they are waiting for both FDA and forensic reports before moving ahead with the investigation.

Victims Identified

The deceased have been identified as Abdulla Dakodia (44), a mobile accessories shop owner based in Andheri; his wife Nasreen (35); and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (12).

Vendors Reluctant to Sell Watermelons

Ali Ahmed Querishi from the Null Bazar Fruit and Vegetable Market Association said vendors are avoiding stocking watermelons. "Traders do not want panic among people as it results in loss for them. Moreover, at the moment, police are also questioning the sellers."

On Tuesday, rumours circulated about additional residents being admitted to J J Hospital due to suspected watermelon poisoning. However, the hospital clarified that no such cases had been reported.
