According to local reports in Australian media, one of the world’s largest crypto exchange, Crypto.com, mistakenly transferred $10.5 million to Thevamanogari Manivel in May 2021, instead of a refund of just $100. Instead of transferring the refund amount, some company employee mistakenly entered the account number in the payment section in place of $100. The mistake was discovered several months later in the annual audit in December 2021.
The company approached the woman for return of wrong transfer but it turns out that Manivel and Gangadory had already spent a portion of the money on buying house and other expensive items. They spent AUD$1.35 million to buy a five-bedroom luxury home.
After filing a lawsuit, an Australian Court has ordered the refund to the company. Court has ordered to sell the property if the women fail to return the funds.
Ordering the refund, the court said: “There’s no doubt that if you saw that in your account you would know it shouldn’t be there, and the onus is actually on you to actually call the sender and to say look that shouldn’t have come into my account.”
“If you’re withholding property of someone else you’re effectively holding property by deception, you’re not entitled to it, you need to give it back,” the court said.
