Cricketer Prithvi Shaw attacked by fans in Mumbai for refusing to take selfie

Cricketer Prithvi Shaw found himself being attacked with a baseball bat after he refused to take a selfie with some fans. The verbal argument quickly escalated into a physical fight and a car chase in Mumbai, according to the police complaint.

So far, eight people have been named in the police report for allegedly charging at Shaw and his friend and then proceeding to break the windshield of their car and demanding Rs 50,000. Two of the people named in the report have been identified as Shobhit Thakur and Sana or Sapna Gill.

They have refuted the claims, stating that Shaw had assaulted them first.


According to the complaint lodged by Prithvi Shaw's friend, the fight began at a luxury hotel in Mumbai's Oshiwara in the early hours of Wednesday after two fans - a man and a woman - approached the cricketer for selfies.

After a few pictures, they refused to back off and Shaw asked his friend and the hotel manager to remove them from the area. After being kicked out, the fans waited outside for the cricketer armed with baseball bats, and a few others had joined them. Once Shaw and his friend left the hotel, they mobbed him, and then proceeded to chase them in their car.

They also demanded ₹ 50,000, threatening to file a fake police case, according to Mr Shaw's friend.

The allegations, however, have been challenged by those named in the case. Speaking to the media, Ali Kashif Khan, the lawyer for Sapna Gill in the case, has alleged that Prithvi Shaw assaulted the woman.

According to a video which was filmed by another person at the scene, Prithvi Shaw is seen struggling with Gill's friend, clutching a broken baseball bat.


Prithvi Shaw has been on a break from competitive cricket after India’s home series against New Zealand. Shaw was recalled to the T20i team for a 3-match series against the BlackCaps at home in January. However, the Mumbai opener did not get an opportunity in the playing XI.

Shaw has been in sensational form in the domestic circut. The Mumbai captain hit 595 runs, including a hundred, in 6 matches in Ranji Trophy 2022-23 season. Shaw broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the highest total by a Mumbai batter in Ranji Trophy (340) when he hit 379 against Assam in January.
