Cricket, chess, cinema, and cosmos: Google Doodle joins celebration of India’s Independence Day

As India celebrates its 79th Independence Day today, August 15, 2025, Google has released a special Doodle featuring tile artwork that highlights national achievements. The day’s events include Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi, following the ceremonial unfurling of the national flag. Across the country, the Tricolour is being displayed in homes, streets, and public spaces to mark the anniversary of freedom from British rule.

Google Doodle India Independence Day: Art inspired by unity in diversity
This year’s Doodle, illustrated by Makarand Narkar and Sonal Vasave of Boomranng Studio, features tiles representing varied artistic styles from across India, including Jaipur’s blue pottery and West Bengal’s terracotta relief work. Each tile showcases a national achievement, from space exploration and chess championships to cricket victories and international film awards. The artwork is intended to symbolise India’s unity in diversity and its progress across multiple fields.


Prime Minister’s address from the Red Fort
Independence Day marks India’s transition to a sovereign republic after nearly two centuries under colonial rule. The celebrations begin each year with the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort and delivering a speech to the nation. According to Google’s description of the Doodle, “The Indian Independence movement was led by prominent figures who championed civil disobedience and nonviolent protests. Their efforts culminated in the birth of the world’s largest democracy.”

Nationwide celebrations
Citizens across India are marking the day with cultural programmes, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and community gatherings. Patriotic songs fill public spaces, while schools and local groups stage skits and dances depicting historical events. Homes and streets are decorated with the Tricolour, and kite flying remains a popular tradition, with the skies filled with colours symbolising freedom.
