Car side mirrors are exposed to everything around a parked vehicle, from dust and moisture to bird droppings and, in colder regions, frost and ice. But there is another unusual problem some car owners can face: birds repeatedly attacking the mirror.

One simple trick involves covering the side mirrors with a plastic bag whenever the car is parked. The bag creates a physical barrier over the mirror and, more importantly, hides the reflective surface that can attract birds.

Why Do Birds Attack Car Side Mirrors?

Birds can sometimes attack their own reflection in car mirrors because they interpret the image as another bird entering their territory. The behaviour, known as "shadow-boxing", involves birds repeatedly striking reflective surfaces with their beaks, wings or feet. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology also explains that birds can mistake their own reflection in car mirrors for a competing bird, particularly during the breeding season when they become more territorial. It recommends altering or covering the reflective surface to remove the reflection.

The behaviour is not simply theoretical. A 2024 case report in The Wilson Journal of Ornithology documented a Northern Cardinal repeatedly striking the side-view mirror of a vehicle. Researchers even observed the bird picking up a pebble and using it to strike the mirror.

How Can a Plastic Bag Help?

The plastic bag does not necessarily frighten birds away. Instead, it hides the mirror and removes the reflection that may be triggering the attacks.

This is consistent with the approach suggested by the Cornell Lab, which says that covering a reflective surface with fabric, newspaper or another material can remove the reflection and help stop the behaviour.

The 2025 Ornithological Applications paper also notes that reducing reflections is one of the proposed ways of mitigating shadow-boxing. However, the researchers point out that mitigation strategies for this specific behaviour have not been studied as extensively as measures for preventing bird-window collisions.

So, the plastic-bag method is best understood as a simple practical way to hide the reflective surface, rather than a scientifically proven treatment specifically involving plastic bags.

Can It Protect the Mirror From Bird Droppings?

Yes, as a temporary barrier.

If birds repeatedly perch on or attack a side mirror, they can leave droppings around the mirror and the surrounding door area. Covering the mirror while the car is parked puts a layer between the exposed surface and anything the bird leaves behind.

The main benefit here is convenience. Instead of cleaning the mirror after birds repeatedly visit it, the owner can remove the cover when returning to the vehicle.

The bag can also keep some dust and other outdoor dirt from settling directly on the mirror while the vehicle remains parked.

What About Frost And Ice?

The same idea can be useful in places where overnight temperatures fall below freezing.

A plastic bag covering the mirror creates a physical barrier between the mirror surface and moisture that can freeze onto it. This can make it easier to clear the mirror before driving.

However, this benefit is mainly relevant to colder climates. In warmer regions, bird attacks, droppings and dust are more practical reasons to use the cover.

How To Use A Plastic Bag On Car Mirrors

The trick requires only a plastic bag large enough to cover the entire side mirror.

Place the bag over the mirror housing while the car is parked and make sure it covers the reflective surface completely. Secure it around the base of the mirror using the bag's handles, a rubber band or another suitable fastening method so that wind cannot easily blow it away.

Use a separate bag for the other side mirror if required.

Most importantly, remove the bags completely before driving. A covering left over the mirror can obstruct the driver's view and create a safety risk.

Does The Hack Solve All Side-Mirror Problems?

No. The plastic bag can help with problems caused by birds, droppings, dust and frost, but it cannot protect against major physical or mechanical damage.

A bag will not prevent another vehicle from hitting the mirror, stop the mirror glass from cracking in a collision or fix problems with power-folding mechanisms, cameras, indicators or other electronics built into modern side mirrors.

Its usefulness is much narrower: it protects the exposed mirror while the car is parked and hides the reflection that can encourage some birds to attack it.
