Couples in Thailand exchange vows atop elephants in Valentine's Day mass wedding

In a celebration of love intertwined with Thailand's rich cultural heritage, nine couples chose Valentine's Day to exchange vows atop elephants, dressed in traditional attire. The event took place at the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Chonburi province, south of Bangkok.

"The ceremony is sacred which makes everyone want to have a wedding atop of the elephants," shared Narumon Komgpanoy, a 36-year-old bride. Elephants hold a special place in Thai culture, symbolizing household and city companionship, as well as national prosperity.

Thailand's national animal, the elephant, has long been revered, with the white elephant symbolizing good fortune. The parade, with dancers in traditional costumes, showcased the couples riding their elephants to the district official for the signing of their marriage licenses.


Expressing his happiness, groom Jirat Somprasung, 36, said, "I feel very happy. Actually, today is the day of love, so I feel good about obtaining the marriage license with my wife."

The event was not just a celebration of love but also a display of Thailand's cultural richness. The sight of elephants, adorned in traditional attire, carrying couples in a solemn procession, highlighted the deep cultural roots of the country.

The choice of elephants as a centerpiece for this mass wedding underscores the deep-rooted symbolism and reverence for these majestic animals in Thai culture. The event was a fusion of love, tradition, and the country's unique heritage, making it a memorable Valentine's Day celebration.
