'Couch, broken furniture, medication bottles': Olympic gold medallist Eileen Gu’s California sea cliff home under scrutiny over trash in upscale area

Pile of furniture blocks sidewalk, fire hydrant hidden
The situation came to light after residents in the upscale Sea Cliff area noticed a large heap of household waste outside the Gu family home on 25th Avenue.ALSO READ: Meet Zach Yadegari: US teen founder sold gaming app for $100K, then built $40M Cal AI and now he is going with the 'Flow'
“The debris-covered sidewalk outside the family’s 25th Avenue property on Tuesday reportedly featured a couch, mattress, broken furniture, clothing, books, medication bottles and other household belongings.” The pile was reportedly so large that it blocked visibility of a fire hydrant, prompting concern from locals, reports The New York Post.
A complaint was also filed through the city’s 311 system, and sanitation workers were alerted to the scene.
Cleanup confusion as city worker finds no pickup order
A Recology worker arrived the following morning to inspect the site, but reportedly found no scheduled pickup request linked to the address. After no one answered the door, the worker initially chose not to remove the items, leaving neighbours frustrated as the clutter remained on the sidewalk.Family responds: “Items were packed, not dumped” Eileen Gu’s mother, Yan Gu, pushed back strongly against the idea that the items were casually dumped outside.
She said she had moved the belongings out around 1 a.m., carefully packing them into about 20 boxes and covering them in case of rain. According to her, the scene that neighbours saw the next morning was not the original setup.
She told SF Standard she was shocked to see the contents scattered and blamed scavengers or “vicious people” for tearing through the pile. She also claimed that a shirt bearing her daughter’s name had been taken, calling it a deliberate act.
Long-running neighbourhood tensions resurface
The incident has reopened discussion about ongoing friction between the Gu family and some Sea Cliff residents. One neighbour told reporters they had not spoken to the family in years following a disagreement over a driveway installation.Another resident alleged issues involving reflective weather vanes that reportedly caused light reflections into the home. City records also show the property has received multiple complaints over the years, ranging from maintenance concerns to sanitation issues.
Separate legal case adds to ongoing controversy
The property is also named in a civil lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court. The plaintiff, Adolfo Avila Chavez, alleges he suffered severe injuries while working at the property in July 2024 after falling from a ramp. The lawsuit claims the contractor involved was unlicensed and uninsured, and that safety measures were not provided. Neither defendant has yet filed a response.
