‘They made me travel halfway across the world’: Employee says company fired him after return-to-office order (AI generated image)

An employee has claimed that his company required him to travel back to his home country within 10 days to comply with a return-to-office mandate, only to dismiss him shortly after he arrived. In a Reddit post, the anonymous worker said he spent a significant amount on last-minute airfare despite having already planned to return about a month later, and was subsequently fired during a meeting with human resources (HR).

The employee said he was the only person working remotely from another country when the company announced the new requirement. Although he explained the travel costs and his existing plans by email, HR reportedly warned him that missing the deadline could lead to consequences. He eventually booked a flight and reported to the office, where he said he was informed that his employment was being terminated.

Employee says company cited policy violations before firing him

According to the Reddit post, the company arranged a meeting with HR soon after the employee reached the office. During the meeting, he said, the company accused him of disregarding its policy, referred to minor issues dating back around two years and told him that the employment relationship was no longer a good fit.

The employee said he received severance equivalent to approximately 10 weeks of salary. However, he questioned why the company had required him to make an expensive international journey when the dismissal could have been communicated through a remote meeting.

He said the experience left him feeling that the trip could have been avoided, particularly because he had already planned to return to his home country in roughly a month.

The post did not identify the company or specify the countries involved, and the employee's account has not been independently verified.

Reddit users question the company's decision

The account prompted discussion among Reddit users, with several suggesting that the return-to-office order might have been intended to pressure the employee into resigning or create grounds for dismissal if he failed to comply. These were commenters' interpretations, rather than established facts about the company's intentions.

One user speculated that the employer had already decided to terminate the employee and hoped he would refuse to return, allowing the company to dismiss him for non-compliance. Another questioned whether the employer had known that the worker was based abroad, noting that being the only employee affected by the mandate seemed unusual.

A commenter also raised the possibility that requiring the employee to return could have been related to differences in employment laws across countries. The user contrasted labour protections in France, Australia and the United States, suggesting that an employer might prefer to handle a termination under the laws of a particular jurisdiction. However, the post did not establish whether legal considerations played any role in the company's decision.

Other commenters criticised the reported sequence of events, describing it as unnecessarily harsh. Another suggested that the employer may have expected the worker to reject the return-to-office requirement so that it could terminate his employment on the grounds of non-compliance.
