Coconut Oil Purity Test
Coconut oil is widely used in cooking, hair care and skin care. Because pure coconut oil commands a higher price, some products on the market may be blended with cheaper oils. To help consumers check the purity of their coconut oil, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) posted a helpful video tutorial on X.

Why It’s Important to Test Coconut Oil

Pure coconut oil has a distinctive texture and solidifies at a particular temperature range. Adulterated coconut oil, mixed with other vegetable or mineral oils, will not behave the same way when chilled. By taking advantage of the different freezing points of oils, you can spot impurities using a simple fridge test.

Consumers today are more conscious than ever about food quality. Knowing how to test coconut oil at home can save money, reduce health risks and ensure that you are using authentic products in your kitchen.

Coconut Oil Purity Test: What You Will Need

Before trying this test, gather the following:

  • A clear, clean container (glass or plastic)
  • Your coconut oil (melted if solid)
  • A refrigerator that can reach 5–10 °C
  • Patience (about 60–90 minutes of cooling time)
This test does not require any special equipment, chemicals or technical skills. It is safe and ideal for everyday kitchens.

Step-by-Step Coconut Oil Adulteration Test

1. Place Coconut Oil in a Container

Spoon or pour a small amount of your coconut oil into a transparent container. A clear view helps you spot changes after cooling. If the oil is solid, gently heat it until it becomes liquid but avoid overheating.

2. Chill the Oil Between 5 and 10 °C

Put the container in the refrigerator. The ideal temperature range for this test is 5–10 °C. This is colder than room temperature but warmer than freezing.

3. Wait for 60–90 Minutes

Let the oil rest undisturbed for about one to one-and-a-half hours. During this time the oil will begin to solidify.

4. Observe the Texture After Cooling

Here is the key: Pure coconut oil will solidify uniformly and its form will remain unchanged.

Adulterated coconut oil often forms separate layers or patches after cooling. This happens because oils with different freezing points do not solidify at the same rate or temperature as pure coconut oil.

If you see a distinct layer on top or uneven solidification, it may indicate the presence of other oils.

Tips for Accurate Results

  • Make sure the refrigerator temperature is stable. Fluctuating temperatures can affect results.
  • Always use a clean container to avoid contamination.
  • Test different brands to compare their behaviour under the same conditions.

Be Smart About Food Safety

Simple home tests like the one shared by FSSAI on X give consumers practical tools to check product authenticity. While this method is not a replacement for lab testing, it helps spot obvious adulteration quickly and cheaply.

By learning how to test coconut oil for purity, you can enjoy healthier cooking and greater confidence in what you buy. #NoToAdulteration
