Christmas, the joyous season of birth, has arrived. This lovely, joyful day carries with it a number of widely observed rituals and traditions. One of these Christmas Eve liturgical customs is the midnight Mass. Here is everything you need to know about midnight mass on the eve of Christmas:

On Christmas Eve, the Midnight Mass is held, which is a very well-liked holiday tradition. The first liturgy of Christmastide that starts at midnight is known as Midnight Mass. The Mass or service of worship is being held in remembrance of Jesus' birth.

In the beginning, Egeria, a Galician lady who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 381-384, wrote about this custom of midnight mass. Egeria had seen how the early Jerusalem Catholics commemorated the Christmas mystery in Bethlehem by holding a vigil at midnight.

Pope Sixtus III introduced this all-night vigil custom to the Western world at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in 430.

The Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and the Lutheran Churches all observe this Christmas Eve liturgical custom. By the 12th century, when all priests were given authority to conduct three Masses on Christmas Day, the popularity of this Midnight Mass had increased even more. The three prospers were to be honoured at their assigned times — midnight, dawn, and day — according to the regulation.

The Roman Catholic Church has long been a proponent of the custom of Midnight Mass. The Pope now celebrates this Mass at 10 p.m. instead of midnight starting January 2009.

This custom's significance is based on the "personal value of forgiveness." The Midnight Service is a vigil mass in which people eagerly await the coming of the Saviour, Jesus. Every year, families join together to commemorate this happy event.
