Man in Netherlands uses tortilla to make bhatura

For Indians living abroad, cravings for familiar street food can sometimes call for a little jugaad. A man in the Netherlands has now found an unusual shortcut for one such craving, using a tortilla to make a bhatura-like dish at home. Visual Facilitation Coach Piyush shared a video on Instagram showing how he turned a regular tortilla bought from Dutch supermarket Albert Heijn into a puffed, bhatura-style accompaniment.

Viral tortilla bhatura hack

In the video, Piyush explains that making bhature from scratch can be difficult, so he decided to try a tortilla instead. He takes a piece of tortilla and puts it into hot oil in a deep fryer. Within seconds, it puffs up, giving it a shape and appearance similar to a freshly fried bhatura.

The experiment was then served with aloo sabzi, making the meal look somewhat like an aloo-puri or aloo-bhatura plate.

Piyush also jokingly asked viewers to invite him over to their homes in the Netherlands for chole bhature if they thought the hack worked.

Does tortilla actually taste like bhatura?

While the fried tortilla may look surprisingly close to a bhatura, social media users were quick to point out that the taste is likely to be different.

Several commenters said the result tastes more like puri than bhatura. One user, claiming to have tried the same trick in the UK, explained that traditional bhatura dough usually includes yoghurt, which gives it a different taste and texture.

Another commenter described the result as essentially a maida poori, arguing that the tortilla cannot fully replicate a traditional bhatura.

Piyush appeared to anticipate the debate, captioning his post: “Haters will say it's puri.”

Indians abroad react to the food experiment

The video sparked plenty of reactions, with some users saying they had already been using tortillas as a quick substitute for Indian fried breads.

One commenter said they had been making the dish this way for around one-and-a-half years. Another called it one of the best food experiments they had seen.

A user living in Spain also said they would give the hack a try.

The experiment even prompted a tongue-in-cheek reaction about using a Mexican tortilla for an Indian dish, with one commenter joking that “Mexicans bohot marenge”, suggesting Mexicans would not be impressed with the idea.

A quick fix for a chole bhature craving

The tortilla may not recreate the exact taste of a traditional bhatura, particularly because the dough and preparation are different. But for Indians living in places where making or finding authentic bhature can be difficult, the trick offers a quick alternative.

And with the puffed tortilla served alongside aloo sabzi, the result certainly looks close enough to trigger a serious chole-bhature craving.
