Valentine Week’s Chocolate Day, usually about sweet exchanges and small surprises, took a disturbing turn in Himachal Pradesh on Monday. A family in Bilaspur district claimed they found a live worm with eggs inside a chocolate made by a well-known company, a PTI report stated. The incident was reported from the Bilaspur Sadar area, even as Chocolate Day was being observed across the world on February 9, 2026.

Chocolate Day and an unexpected scare

Chocolate Day is the third day of Valentine Week, when people exchange chocolate bars, truffles, and homemade brownies. For many, chocolate is comfort food, often described as an instant hug.

But for one family in Himachal’s Bilaspur district, that moment of comfort allegedly turned into fear.

Ramesh Chand Kaundal, a resident of Mandi Manwa village in the Bilaspur Sadar area, claimed he purchased a chocolate bar from a local market. When he opened the wrapper, he allegedly found a live worm inside the chocolate, which had also laid eggs on it.

Kaundal said he noticed the contamination before the child consumed the chocolate. He added that if the child had eaten it, he could have contracted a fatal disease or his life could have been in danger.

Expiry date still valid

According to the family, the chocolate packet showed an expiry date of May 2026 and also carried a code number. Despite being completely valid, the presence of such contamination in the product raises serious questions about the company’s quality control, Kaundal maintained.

He said he has safely preserved the chocolate and will now pursue legal action against the company.

Reacting to the claim, Assistant Commissioner of the Food Safety Department, Mahesh Kashyap, said he will investigate the matter if the incident is found to be true.

He said the administration would not let such items be sold, and if anything wrong is found, strict action will be taken against the suppliers and manufacturers.

The family has said it will take the company to court, as the investigation by the food safety authorities is awaited.
