China AI education
Beijing has launched a new initiative to train young students in artificial intelligence (AI) as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen China’s technological leadership. Starting this academic year, primary and secondary schools in the city will conduct at least eight hours of AI classes annually. Students as young as six will learn to use chatbots, understand basic AI concepts, and explore AI ethics, a report published in Fortune stated.

As per the Fortune report, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission announced that schools can incorporate AI education into existing subjects like science and information technology or offer it as a standalone course. The commission also revealed plans to establish a multi-year AI curriculum, build a general AI education system, provide support structures, and promote AI learning across schools.

China pushes AI learning in schools

China views early AI education as a key element in maintaining its competitive edge in the global AI industry. In December, the Ministry of Education selected 184 schools across the country to pilot AI programs that could later expand nationwide. Huai Jinpeng, China’s Minister of Education, emphasised AI’s importance, calling it the “golden key” to the country’s education system.

Authorities believe that introducing AI education at an early stage will contribute to technological innovation. Beijing’s approach may be inspired by the success of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, which has produced prominent tech leaders like DeepSeek’s Liang Wenfeng and Unitree’s Wang Xingxing. By integrating AI into school curricula, China aims to develop future generations of AI experts.

Other countries are integrating AI in education

Other countries are also incorporating AI into education to keep pace with technological advancements. Estonia’s government recently partnered with OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT Edu for secondary school students and teachers. The initiative, set to begin in September, will provide AI-powered study support, administrative task automation, and lesson planning tools.

Canada, South Korea, and the UK have also integrated AI into K-12 education. Some institutions use AI-powered textbooks, while a private school in the UK has implemented a “teacherless” classroom where students rely on virtual reality headsets and AI platforms for learning.
