He sustained a gunshot wound on his forehead and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police told news agency PTI.

AAP sarpanch shot dead in Amritsar wedding horror

Jarmal Singh was shot dead when he was attending a ceremony at the Marigold Marriage Palace when the attack happened. According to officials, two unidentified gunmen entered the resort between 2:30 pm and 3 pm, targeting Singh and shooting him at point-blank range in the head. A chilling video of the incident was shared by Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on X which shows two men dressed in hoodies and jeans, walking through the crowd with firearms in their hands before killing the 50-year-old sarpanch.

In the spine-chilling video, the miscreants can be seen moving towards Jarmal Singh who was seated at a table wearing a yellow turban and speaking with another guest. Moments later, they open fire and flee the venue on foot. “Strongly condemn the cold-blooded murder of Sarpanch Jarmal Singh of Valtoha village (Tarn Taran), who was shot dead at a wedding function in Amritsar today,” Badal wrote.

Police sources told TOI that the gunmen shot Singh dead moments after the bride and groom left the venue and despite the presence of numerous wedding guests, the attackers did not try to hide their identities. "The assailants arrived with premeditated intent," a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by TOI. "Eyewitness accounts suggest the attackers did not cover their faces, and we suspect the victim was under heavy surveillance prior to the incident," he added.

Who is behind AAP sarpanch's murder?

According to TOI, after Jarmal Singh succumbed to his injuries, gangster Prabh Dasuwal along with Donny Bal and others claimed responsibility for the murder in a purported video. The police visited the spot, took CCTV footage and recorded the statements of eyewitnesses. The police have launched a search to identify and nab the assailants.

Amritsar deputy commissioner of police (Investigation) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said, "We are investigating the incident from all angles. The culprits would be nabbed soon." Additional deputy commissioner JS Walia said an investigation is underway. "We have cordoned off the resort and are questioning guests," Walia said. "CCTV footage is being analysed to track the escape route of the suspect," he added.
