Iran has come to a standstill as massive protests have gripped the country caused by a growing political and economic crisis. Various protestors have taken to the streets of Tehran and other Iranian cities in anti-government demonstrations with videos showing intense clashes between protesters and security forces in cities including Shiraz, Isfahan, Kermanshah and Tehran. As Iran continues to intensify its effort to crack down on anti-government protests, a video of an elderly female protestor has defied the Islamic regime and has become a symbol of nationwide agitation. The video shows a protestor with bloodied face marching during protests in Borujerd, in Lorestan province in western Iran, according to Iran International. In the footage, she says: “I am not afraid, I have been dead for 47 years,” referring to the period since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Defiant Iranian protestors have confronted security forces in crowded streets and with demonstrators throwing objects and shouting, “Death to the dictator” and “Proud Arakis, support, support.” Footage shared by People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) shows crowds chanting, “Death to Khamenei!” and “Shame on you, shame on you!” as anger appears to spread across the country.

The Islamic regime in Iran started 47 years ago with the 1979 Islamic revolution, overthrowing the pro-Western Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and establishing a Shiite Islamic theocracy led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The current Supreme Leader of Iran, Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, is the grandson of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Reza Pahlavi has called for the protests to continue at 20:00 local time (16:30 GMT) on Friday night

Sharing the clip on X, Iranian-American journalist and activist Masih Alinejad wrote, "I'm not afraid. I've been dead for 47 years, This is the voice of a woman in Iran who is fed up with the Islamic republic." "47 years ago, the Islamic Republic took our rights and turned a nation into hostages. Today people have nothing left to lose, they rise. Iran is rising," she added.

Iran protests intensify

Iranian protesters shouted and marched through the streets into Friday morning, despite Iran’s theocracy cutting off the nation from the internet and international telephone calls. As sanctions tightened and Iran struggled after the 12-day war, its rial currency collapsed in December, reaching 1.4 million to $1. Protests began soon after, with demonstrators chanting against Iran’s theocracy. Iran’s currency has lost significant value over the past year, pushing up import costs and fuelling inflation, which official figures place above 50%. US President Donald Trump has repeated his threat to "hit Iran hard" if government forces kill protesters who are demonstrating over the country's economic crisis.
