A US citizen who came to India nine years ago has built a life in Goa after starting a business and marrying a local woman. Frustrated with inflation affecting his quality of life in America, Elliot Rosenberg moved abroad and now lives comfortably for less than ₹1 lakh per month.

Financial decision that changed everything

In a LinkedIn post, Rosenberg shared, "I made a rare financial decision 12 years ago. And it has changed my finances (and life) forever. Most personal finance gurus tell you to: Budget your expenses. Invest and hold long-term. Build multiple streams of income. Then, you achieve: (F)inancial (I)ndependence (R)etire (E)arly."

He acknowledged the value of this advice but found the US too expensive. "Inflation is bad, but 'lifestyle creep' is worse," he wrote.

The pressure to spend more

Rosenberg highlighted the social pressures in the US to spend on restaurants, concerts, and shopping to maintain friendships. This led him to leave the country. He initially traveled to Brazil and other South Asian nations before choosing India as his home.

Finding a home in India

"I met my wife here, became close to her family, learned Hindi, have made lifelong bonds, and started 2 businesses," he wrote.

He also shared details about his cost of living in India, emphasising that he enjoys a comfortable lifestyle at a much lower expense compared to the US.

Social media reacts

Many users appreciated his decision. One person commented, "I loved your appetite to take risks and be adventurous... It has paid off, and I gather you are fulfilled. Thanks for sharing your story." Another wrote, "Good to know that India is far better for healthy and safe living." A third user added, "Love the story—kudos for having the courage to go pursue a life outside of the 'norms!'"

Rosenberg completed his schooling in the US and earned a BS in Commerce and a second major in Latin American Studies from the University of Virginia. Over his career, he has founded several companies, including two in India.
