However, there is a catch. The Moon will be rising during most of the eclipse in India. This means people will only be able to see the last phase. The visible portion is expected to last around 20 minutes, with noticeable changes taking place close to sunset. The Moon will rise from the eastern side of the sky.

Why is it called a “Blood Moon”?

A total lunar eclipse has five phases. It begins when the Moon enters the Earth’s faint outer shadow, known as the penumbral phase. The partial eclipse starts when the Moon moves into the darker central shadow of the Earth, called the umbra.

It is during this stage that the Moon turns reddish. This red glow gives the event its popular name — the “Blood Moon.”

The total phase of the eclipse is said to last 58 minutes, although the entire process, including all phases, may stretch over a few hours.
